The first mention of the village

Archeological discoveries from bronze age but mostly additionally discovered halstadt fortified settlement on the hill of Ostražica shows that it is possible to talk about small settlement before 13th century in this area. The first written evidence of the existence of the middle age village is from 1380. According to this registered recommendation castellans of the Orava castle had to protect liberties and rights of the villains from Twardoschin Superior, at the same time Twardoschin Inferior had to exist which might have been only Nižná.

For sure it's possible to assert that 15 years after, in 1395 the lower village Twardoschin (Nižná) has already existed and according to historical documents from 1420 Nižná is denominated as a Nissne Wes as a property of the Orava castle. According to the latest researches historians assume that Nižná is probably older village than Tvrdošín. In the history Tvrdošín had more important position because of better geographical location and because of the existence of the station close to the ford through the river Orava.

In the 15th century the new soil for the agricultural purposes was obtained by deracinating of local woods and number of inhabitants increased. The district of the village was undefined at the beginning of the 16th century, mainly from Krásna Hôrka and Zemianska Dedina. District was presented in this way: the borders with Krásna Hôrka are common, the borders with Zemianska Dedina aren't marked off. Behind river Orava inhabitants have the right to use the soil as far as the brook Studena. With the inhabitants of Podbiel they have the right to use a soil as far as Červená Skala and as far as the hill of Magura.

Although Nižná was the property of the Orava castle for whole centuries, the dynamical development already appeared during middle ages. In the 15th century Nižná already had a church consecrated to st. Gal. From 16th century Nižná had it's own organized administration. In 1624 Nižná had 2 mills and 1 lumbermill. In that time village had about 400 citizens. In 1625 Orava castle as an owner set down a new register of the duties and charges of the villains. The amount and the extent of the duties and financial charges had also been set down for the citizens of Nižná. The calm development of the village had been interrupted by natural disasters and also by fires caused by unfriendly enemies. In 1666 the houses of the poorest citizens of the village were destroyed by flood and never had been renovated. The village became desolated. This situation was also influenced by the transit of enemies of John Sobieski through Orava. In the document called Urbarium renovatum sub 1686 cum conscripcione Allodiorum dominalium sub Arcensis ... which was published by Orava castle in 1686 the transit of this army through Nižná was described in this way: ... pagus iste totaliter et ex integro per Litvanos fuerat exustus.... this village has been absolutely destroyed, many citizens of the village had to leave village immediately. Devastation of the village had been multiplied with 2 fires in the village.

In 1695 the new register of the homesteads was realized in accordance with the membership of particular parishes. The parish of Nižná was composed of this villages: Nižná, Zuberec, Habovka, Biely Potok, Podbiel and Zemianska Dedina. In 1714 there were 14 homesteads in Nižná (approximately 505 citizens).

  In 1785 there were 1031 citizens in Nižná, in 1825 - 1179 citizens, in 1869 - 1223 citizens, in 1880 - 1118 citizens, in 1890 - 1217 citizens, in 1910 - 910 citizens, in 1921 - 829 citizens, in 1934 - 924 citizens, in 1940 - 933 citizens.
